More and more and more

I'm enjoying the color studies.  I only wish I could find the time for them more consistently and then  -- post them more frequently.  This selection is from the past couple of months.

Environment Studies

Here is a set of landscape color/value studies.  I've found that doing these exercises is good for maintaining my color sense and also exploring how other artists achieve similar results.

Sometimes it's also helpful to block out an environment in 3D and then execute a paintover to fully visualize the end result.  Here's a more recent value paintover of a quick 3d mockup:

This is another old example, but it also demonstrates the process well.

Inspired by Others

Like any good artist, I'm inspired by other franchises and IPs.  Every now and then I feel motivated to create my own piece to "add" to the mix.  I like the challenge of trying to find something unique but still true to the "aesthetic core" of a different project.

Inspired by the Fable franchise from Lionhead/Microsoft.  This was my take on a dockside worker/sailor.

Inspired by the Mass Effect franchise from Bioware/EA.  This profile shot was intended to convey alien intelligence.

I really enjoyed the TV series Hard Target for the brief time that it aired.  Guerrero was certainly one of my favorite characters.

Inspired by the Prince of Persia franchise from Ubisoft.  I created a "Corrupted Handmaiden."  This one is pretty old and I can't get past the flaws now.  However, the core of the idea still sticks for me.

Inspired by The Wolf Among Us by Telltale Games.  I was motivated to take a different set of fables (the billy goats gruff) and modernize each to give them unique but familial identities.

The Dresden Files

I'm a pretty big fan of the series of novels from Jim Butcher.  As a personal exercise, I've tried to design several of the characters and locations visited throughout the series.  Here is a set of head designs I executed for the key protagonist, Harry Dresden.

Traditional Media

Other than figure drawing, it's difficult to find time for traditional media.  Regardless, I do enjoy putting graphite/charcoal to paper or busting out the SuperSculpey from time to time.

A charcoal portrait of my daughter, Briana.

One of the creature busts I've created in SuperSculpey.

Art Rage Portraits

For a period of time, I explored using Art Rage to create quick portrait studies.  I really enjoy the program's natural media brushes.  Here are a few samples of pieces I created from photos that I took or pictures I found online.

CGHub is down

Well, in the wake of finding out that CGHub is down, it occurred to me that I should REALLY have a backup page for showing off my personal work.

Well, there's a lot I want to show you and I need to figure out how.  Truthfully, I've never been a fan of blog-style portfolios.  Mostly because things are organized chronologically instead of topically.

Oh well, let's see what I can do in the meantime.

If it ever comes back, you can find my CGHub page at:
